About Journal

Introduction

Národopisná revue (the Journal of Ethnology) is a continuation of a professional journal that was published under the name Národopisné aktuality (Ethnological News) (na.nulk.cz) between 1964 and 1989. With a new graphic design and diversity of content, the former editors tried to make contemporary ethnological research more popular, and thus to increase their readership. Gradually, however, the journal again set itself up as a professional periodical, focused on ethnological (and related interdisciplinary) issues in social and historical contexts.

The good prestige of Národopisná revue is emulated except the editor´s office by the editorial board and since 2009 by the international editorial board too. The column Forthcoming Themes offers not only information on the contents of incoming issues but also the terms of its deadlines.

The main intention of the editors is to reflect the discipline development and the object of its research as flexibly as possible. Národopisná revue thus presents topics from the field of traditional culture, as well as research on contemporary society, reflecting the lively research field that brings new impulses for the discipline. In this context, it also deals with folklorism and tasks addressed by the National Institute of Folk Culture, which is the journal publisher. Studies and research reports are published in monothematic issues, in Czech, Slovak, and English. Contributions not related to the main theme of each issue are published to a limited extent only. In addition, a special issue in English is published irregularly. Interesting findings from contemporary ethnological research, observations from the field of folklorism (folklore revival), and comparative probes into traditional ethnological issues are presented in the form of articles, reflections and reports in the Transforming Tradition column. Sections Looking Back and Social Chronicle commemorate personalities of Czech and foreign ethnology and prominent representatives of folklorism; they are conceived as material contributions to the historiography of ethnology.

A large part of Národopisná revue includes reports on conferences, seminars and exhibitions, reviews of new publications, news and information on activities in the field of care for folk traditions and cultural heritage.

Národopisná revue also includes separately published bibliographical supplements mapping the works of prominent Czech and Slovak scholars in the field of ethnology.
